The Farmer's Market
Saturday, June 12, 2004
This morning Dad and I got up early and went to the local farmer's market. We met some of the nicest people in the world there...friendly, happy, generous local farmers who were eager to have us try their ripe melons and tomatoes or to buy "the best onions you will ever eat." Just the smell of those "super sweet" onions convinced me I had to have some. The man who grew them assured me I'd be back for more and he would be there all summer, same spot. I'm going to chop those onions into small pieces and freeze them in small amounts for future use, as well as some red, green and yellow peppers that we got for a very nice price. There was an Irish band playing and stalls selling coffee and sweet rolls and other enticing treats. Everything looked so good -- even the peaches were ripe and ready to use! Then, while shopping at the local grocery store we found grapes for $.77 a pound! So...we bought a bunch of them and I'm in the process of freezing them as well, along with some very sweet cherries that we also on sale, but not for $.77. They will be a wonderful treat on the very hot days ahead (actually, today was mighty warm). So...if you find some great deals on cherries and grapes, and they are pretty great tasting, buy a bunch and wash them up, let them dry a bit, take the grapes off the vines, or pull the stems out of the cherries and just leave the pits in, and flash freeze them on a cookie sheet, then throw them in a big zipper freezer bag. They will be a wholesome and delicious cold treat on a hot summer day.
I also bought some honey, Chris! It's called Jordy honey, named after the farmer's son, who was right there helping his dad and learning the business. I will put that little squeeze bottle in my nightstand drawer for those middle of the night irritating coughs from a dry throat. Chris says it is as effective as Robitussin and, of course, much better tasting. I'll be testing it out tonight, I'm sure.
If you have a local farmer's market, I hope it is as much fun as ours! It was a great way to start a Saturday!
As always...Me
