Food for Thought:

Let the children play
And sit like flowers upon thy grave
And crown with flowers, that hardly have
A briefer blooming-tide than they.

It is hot here. It is SO hot here. Last summer was just wonderful...warm but not really hot. This year...HOT! If I have to go out in the heat for more than 15 minutes I am "wiped out" and have to sit for an hour to regain my strength. It makes me feel very old and it really makes me wonder if I'm up for a small farm and the chores involved. I'm up early every day and if I have outdoor things to do, I do them as early as I can. That, or I save some of those chores for the sunset hours. I love the long days of summer and the beauty that surrounds me here in Kansas, but I'm really hating this heat. How did our forefathers ever handle this? Siestas? This heat lasts much longer than the mid-day hours! They must have thanked Father in Heaven every day for trees and springs and the coolness of the night. I thank Him everyday for air-conditioning and sprinkler systems...everyday!

We continue our hunt for that perfect little piece of land. We are so excited to get started creating our little corner of the world with our perfect garden for old people (built high and easy to walk around) and a nice pond and our chickens and our dogs and our cats and our guinea hens. Yes...now I want a brood of guinea hens. They eat bugs and tics and attack snakes! Yes...I definitely want guinea hens. The problem is, there are a lot of us looking for that perfect piece of land and we are all circling like vultures, ready to swoop in and snatch a piece of land as soon as it goes on the market. We keep looking at the "not so perfect" lots and pondering the possibilities, but...somewhere out there is OUR little piece of heaven, and we will look until it finds us or we find it. It's fun...don't get me wrong. You know me...long rides in the country are one of my favorite things to do. The cars are air-conditioned so the heat is not hampering the hunt. We will keep circling until we find it.

Melanie and little Jorge are flying in tonight so I'll be busy and having fun for the next week and a half. Then I will continue my summer routine of reading a book a week and working on some cross-stitch I've had for years. I'm not teaching this summer, and have very little to do as far as Enrichment Meetings go, so...I'll keep doing these lovely indoor things that require little exertion and dream of how I'm going to suddenly become younger and stronger and healthier for "the farm."

Love reading all your blogs! (Hi Birgid! Where's your blog?) Enjoy your wonderful children and these lazy summer days. Read them lots of good books. Eat lots of watermelon. Fly your flag on the 4th! Stay cool.
