Food for Thought:

Let the children play
And sit like flowers upon thy grave
And crown with flowers, that hardly have
A briefer blooming-tide than they.

Rocky Mountain Pilgrimage UPDATE
Thursday, September 15, 2005

Oh my goodness, oh my gracious! I DID forget one highlight of the trip home from Salt Lake. What was I thinking! AS we neared Denver, we hopped on I-25 South and headed for Colorado Springs to visit that cute little family of five...the Joseph Stouts! We had a wonderful dinner at Mimi's, which is a favorite of mine, and then played with Summer, Merlin and Carolee on the playground at the Residence Inn where Dad and I spent the night before continuing to Kansas. We saw Merlin in action, flirting with older women. He ended up playing basketball with two cute girls (maybe 10 and 12 years old)...what a flirt! I really don't know what I was thinking, Joe, because it was, OF COURSE, a definite highlight of the whole journey.

Rocky Mountain Pilgrimage
Saturday, September 10, 2005

We drove from Kansas City to Salt Lake City last week, following I-70 through Kansas and Colorado. The state of Kansas is flat, as we all know...stand on a tuna can and you can see forever! So is eastern Colorado. But then...sigh...you hit the mountains. The air is crisp and smells like...Colorado! It doesn't matter where you look...it's beautiful. We stopped in Rifle to visit with Evan, Connie, Kyle and Eric and fell in love with Rifle. Their home is surrounded with breath-taking mountain views and they tell us they get very little snow!! Snow all around, but very little snow right in Rifle...a phenomenon of nature. We had lunch with all four at the local golf course (the boys skipped their afternoon session of high school to be with us)and continued our journey. With George Laub's 1857 journal in hand (Evan let us borrow it one more time) we headed for Provo to show it to John Welch, editor-in-chief of BYU Studies and founder of Farms. He and a member of the Church History Department were excited to have it and the BYU Law School made a wonderful scan of it for us, and for BYU. (We will get a CD to each of you soon.) We reached Salt Lake and found our condo in good shape...felt like we were home...and enjoyed spending time with Michael, Denise and family, Aaron and Alice, and Kathy (who flew in with Xion...our newest grandson). We always enjoy our time in Salt Lake. After three short days in Salt Lake, we made an about-face and followed the same trail home, returning George Laub's journal to Evan and taking in the beauty of the Rockies one more time. As we neared Kansas City, everything turned green and hills began to appear and we knew we were home. I seem to need that Rocky Mountain "fix" every now and then...like penguins need to return to their birthplace every year. (Have you seen "March of the Penguins" at the cinema? It's a winner!) I'm grateful I can make that pilgrimage whenever I want to, and that those mountains don't change and the air is still crisp. I'll always be a Coloradoan at heart.
